  Seed Production Research  

Research on seed production aspects is utmost important in forages including range species due to scantly available quality seed. The research was mainly concentrated on developing suitable interventions for seed yield/ germination increase.

Crop management for better seed production/germination

  • 40 kg/ha P2O5 in low P soil & 30 kg/ha P2O5 in high P soil
  • Mo & Co @3kg/ha, spraying of 1 kg P2O5/ha and 2-4 kg/ha KNO3 at anthesis with seed rate @15 kg/ha
  • 40-80 Kg K2O/ha with 40 Kg P2O5 and 20 Kg Nitrogen/ha
  • Line sowing with 40 cm R-R spacing
  • Foliar application of Tresol @2.5 l/ha, KNO3 @4 kg/ha, 4% H3PO4 solution
  • Seed rate @75 kg/ha with 50 kg P2O5/ha
  • Foliar spraying of boron 1 g/l
  • Foliar spraying of 4 kg KNO3/ha
  • 40-80 kg P2O5/ha + 120 kg K2O/ha, foliar spray of KNO3 @6 kg/ha enhances seed yield
  • Foliar application of NAA (100 ppm) + DAP (2kg/ha) + K (2Kg/ha) increases seed yield (5.25 q/ha) over the control (3.6 q/ha)
  • 80 kg P2O5/ha
  • KNO3 @4kg/ha or CuSO4 @1kg/ha
  • 50-100 kg K2O/ha enhances seed yield
  • Harvesting at 25 days after panicle emergence gives 34% germination " Foliar spraying of 100 ppm IAA at inflorescence stage doubles (45%) the germination as compared to control (23%)
  • Pre-sowing seed treatment with 0.2% KNO3 improves germination
  • Seed rate @6 kg/ha with 75 cm spacing
  • 60 kg/ha N and 60 kg P2O5/ha, KNO3 (2%, 4% and 6% solution) or Thiourea (0.25%, 0.50% and 0.75% solution) at spike initiation stage
  • Pre-sowing seed treatment with GA3 (100ppm), KNO3 (0.2% and 0.4%) and soaking in water for 18-24 hours increases seed yield
  • Pre-sowing seed treatment with 0.2% KNO3 improves germination
  • 80 N kg/ha with 50 cm R-R spacing
  • 90% pure germinating seed (PGS) is confirmed by manual dehusking at physiological seed maturity stage, but caryopsis drops during normal harvesting leading to high blank seed percentage.
